The roses have wilted and the chocolate box is empty. The Valentine decor is marked down, relegated to the clearance isle and Easter decor is everywhere, seemingly overnight!
Valentine's Day often shines a spotlight on romantic love, but true love extends far beyond a single day of celebration. So, where do we look to find out what true love looks like? The Word of God; a book that contains one love letter that spans the course of over four millennia. God is the source.
God is the origin, standard, and definition of love.
Everything truly loving flows from His nature. Love exists because God exists; it does not begin with human affection or morality. God’s love is holy, covenantal, and sovereign.
We love, because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19
Understanding Love as a Daily Practice
As believers, we know that true love was never meant to be confined to February 14th or special occasions. It’s not red roses or heart-shaped cards, it's patience, forgiveness and prayer. It's a covenant not based on a feeling but covenant faithfulness. Just as God keeps His covenant promises despite human unfaithfulness, true love is steadfast, devoted, and rooted in commitment. It is a daily practice that requires attention and effort. To nurture love beyond Valentine's Day, it is essential to recognize that small, consistent actions build strong bonds over time.
In a world where “love” is often measured by gifts or words, prayer remains one of the most powerful and yet most overlooked expressions of love. When you pray for someone, you are carrying them before the throne of grace, appealing to the only One who can truly help, heal, and sanctify. True love seeks the eternal good of the beloved, and prayer does exactly that. It directs our affection past temporary comforts to what matters most: their soul’s growth in Christ.
When you pray for your spouse, you are not merely asking God to bless them, you are participating in God’s sanctifying work in their life. Prayer helps you love them with patience when your heart grows weary and gives you humility when your own sin threatens peace. It deepens compassion, forgiveness, and unity because it shifts your focus away from self toward God’s grace working in both of you.
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
So even after Valentine’s Day, when the flowers fade and everyday routines return, prayer remains the quiet heartbeat of lasting love. It’s where romantic affection matures into covenant faithfulness, where our marriages are strengthened, and where Christ’s love overflows through us. If you’d like to nurture that rhythm of prayer for your spouse, explore the Prayers for My Beloved Husband and Prayers for My Beloved Wife collections in the shop. May each page draw you both closer to the Source of perfect love.
