Slow Your Scroll

I don’t know about you but my muscles have a new memory; picking up my phone and scrolling. 10 minutes have gone by before I know it and I have saved several recipes I’ll never cook, read three arguments between strangers, and viewed a carousel on how to make the perfect carousel.
It’s so easy to let our moments of quiet become filled with motion; tiny swipes and taps that occupy our minds but leave our hearts empty. The constant scroll trains our thoughts to move fast, chasing the next thing instead of sitting still.
According to the McAfee security company, “Zombie Scrolling” is a term coined to describe the effects of cell phone addiction. It’s defined as “mindless scrolling out of habit, with no real destination or benefit.
The habit of endless scrolling, also know as "doomscrolling" or "dopamine looping", carries hidden costs to our minds, our bodies, and even our peace.
But Scripture calls us to the opposite rhythm.
Mind numbing, zoned-out, and autopilot moments are not how we are to spend our waking conscious moments.
In 2 Corinthians 10:5, Paul reminds us to ‘take every thought captive to obey Christ.’ As my ole pastor used to say, ‘What does every mean? It means every!’”
We should be actively thinking about what we are thinking about.
In Ephesians 5:15-16 we are told to “be careful how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.”
Endless scrolling certainly does not “make the most of our time”.
We just need to take what may seem like extreme measures to curb the use of our phone. Some helpful hints are;
· Turn off all notifications
· Keep your phone across the room at night
· Delete social media apps from cell phone
· Set a timer for 5 minutes to limit your time scrolling
· Use your phone’s built-in “screen time” app to visibly see how much time you are using it
The challenge isn’t just to use our phones less; it’s to fill that space with something better. Read a Psalm. Write a note. Pray. Be present.
Let's do this together,
Tami
